The Castells

Location

The Castells are a brand new bunch of upstarts from Durham, North of England. They have been in the studio and posted a number of new tracks up onto myspace. (Go to our radio player and listen to Romance as you read this review!!!) So why should you bother clicking the link and listening to more of their stuff? Well they are a bit raw round the edges but theres plenty of potential to make us think that they could be onto something. The opening track is by name and nature Infectious. It reminds me of The Bandits. Remember them? A bunch of wily Scouse upstarts from about 2002/2003. Rather than a tune it sounds like a race to get to the end of the song. But its great.

Hints of The Coral grace the next tune; Romance. Breathy vocals and a tune that builds and dips like a small roller coaster. (Hopefully you have been listening as you read.) Sweet nothing starts with a rumbling bass and then skips off in a number of directions before coming back to begin all over again. Final track Dead Thead Count is at first listen the weakest of the four tracks. Buts its refrain of “If you loved me half as much as you love yourself then we’d be alright”. Burrows its way into the brain and wont come out! A grower I think they call it!!!

I would also like to bet that these scamps are much better caught out and about rather than in the confines of a studio. They can be found at the following venues in the coming months. We here at The Northern Line will be looking to catch them sooner rather than later;

September 30th : Ivy House, Sunderland
October 22nd : The Cluny, Newcastle
November 8th : Plugged in w/The Chapman Family
