The Miserable Rich And Cattle And Cane At The Westgarth In Middlesbrough 2/10/10

Location

Another great night. Another great bill at the greatest club on earth. Our friend Jon from the Suitcase Orchestra has done the review of the headliners The Miserable Rich. It is short and sweet but needs no extras from me or anyone else. The review encapsulates what a great performance it was…………..

The Miserable Rich Westgarth SC, Middlesbrough

Red Wine. Dark Chocolate. An Autumn leaf twisting to the ground. Early Mourning. The scent of a freshly snuffed candle. Pegasus. A violin. Double bass. Somerhill. A black and white film on a wet Sunday afternoon. The Chime Of A City Clock. Liquorice. Boat Song.. A minor chord. A collar turned to the cold. Time. A lovers embrace. A childs smile. Glass of port. Shades. Silver birch. An open fire. Poodle. A morning mist. Monkey. Rust. Frost. Rain against a window pane. Pisshead. The first snow of the year. Spring rain. The rattle of a train. Wolf. Village Greens. Dead End Streets. Waterloo Sunsets. Chestnut. That, ladies and gentlemen, is the sound of The Miserable Rich. Magnificent.

Before them was one of our favourites here at The Northern Line; Cattle & Cane. Now we have reviewed these boys and girls a number of times before but I really never get sick of seeing them or telling you how great they really are. You may not believe me yet but one day you will realise. Tonight was the first performance from their new violin player; Mina Jackson. Liam Finn, the old violin player has hob knobbed down to Cambridge to shout “rah rah rah we’re going to smash the oiks!!” and other such toff anthems whilst drinking pimms, playing polo and generally looking down his nose at the hoi polloi! He has been replaced by a younger, better looking and far more working class model. Also missing tonight was James Hammill, sibling and guitarist in the band. He seems to think work is better than a future in rock “N” roll. Good luck to him but I hope he doesn’t regret turning his back on these bright young hopes. On Saturday we are off to see them at The Empire in Middlesbrough with those other local heroes; Young Rebel Set. Surely the best local double bill ever?

Tonights performance was as good as ever with a number of new songs being added to the set. Each song has that magical quality of sounding new yet familiar. Despite losing two members and gaining only one their sound was still as full as ever. They grow with each performance and I really can’t see how they are not going to be huge one day. They have an EP in the can and ready to unleash it on an unsuspecting world. Their star is bright and ready to go into orbit. They finish with Sold my Soul and The Poacher. Both songs being greeted like old friends despite only being a few months old and not having been released yet.
