Hadouken! The Empire, Middlesbrough 18/11/10
Review a great band, in the Boro for The Northern Line?… Yeah… I’ll do that!!!
If you’re new to Hadouken!, they’re a Leeds 5 piece, formed back in 2006, who play high energy, euphoric, guitar and synth driven, new wave in the genre of Pendulum and Late of the Pier.
The evening began typically for the north east, rain sheeting down, as the crowd outside became more eager to enter the Empire as excitement built.
The crowd slowly started to fill the small venue, as the build up towards the support band increased and small groups began to edge away from the bar and closer to the stage!
As the lights dimmed the crowd headed for the barriers as the support band “Pocket Lips” appeared on stage. Despite the differences in style the crowd seemed to enjoy the support, with fans attempting to mosh to get the crowd going.
Pocket Lips left the stage with the crowds thoroughly warmed up and raring for the main act. With occasional shouts from the crowd of “Had-ouk-en!” demanding the band enter the stage. Starting with a small group in the crowd, until the entire room joined in. Then as James Smith took to the stage, the crowd cheered and pushed from the back, to get closer to the stage and we all new it was going to be a great gig.
Hadouken! began with some older songs from their first album, Music From An Accelerated Culture, before playing more well known songs from their latest album “For The Masses” with songs such as “M.A.D”, “Mic Check” and “House Is Falling Down” inviting the crowd to sing along loudly. Of course during these upbeat songs the moshing began, with younger members of the crowd, not only, possibly experiencing their first gig, but probably their first mosh pit… courtesy of Hadouken!
Hadouken! finally showcased their latest song “Mecha Love” which was only released online the day before. Fans went wild, at the new single creating several mosh pits within the crowd and forcing many of us to grab hold of the front barriers. Throughout the entire gig, Hadouken created an amazing upbeat atmosphere that engulfed the room and ensured the crowd enjoyed the songs.
Overall, Hadouken! kept up their reputation for gigs, involving insane crowds and a massive atmosphere forced into a small venue. They played songs for both hard-core fans and the newer ones experiencing their first gig. A great performance from Hadouken!, as expected, a decent support act and fantastic interaction from the crowd.
