The Empire In Middlesbrough: Whats On…….

A quick round up of whats coming up at one of our favourite venues. Pigeon Detectives, Big Country and a first time in Middlesbrough (I think) for Public Image Ltd. As well as the 18th birthday celebrations for the legendary club night that is SugarShack featuring Mark Ronson. (DJ set) Not really my cup of tea these days but I did actually attend the 4th, 5th and 6th birthday bashes!!!! I know, I know, can you believe that????

So without further warblings what is on at the legendary theatre. First up next Monday (28th March) Leeds’ own bushy haired herberts The Pigeon Detectives promoting their third album. This is sure to be rammed with plenty of jumping up and down and shouting catchy choruses to your hearts content. I would actually fancy this myself but I’m off to The Crookes at the Westgarth. (Bad planning that by someone!!!!) The Northern Line will be in attendance and we’ll let you know how good it was or better still get there and see for yourself. Then on Good Friday (22nd of April) Big Country come to town. Now obviously fans of this band know that no-one can replace Stuart Adamson, RIP, but they’ve roped in Mike Peters from The Alarm to give it a go. The Alarm will be the support. So if you fancy pretending its 1983 or 1984 get down and pogo. Then bang up to date Nashvilles own Mona are up on Tuesday the 24th of May. They are inspired by the spirit of Presley, Perkins, Lewis and Cash. If they’re even a tenth as good as any of those four they will be worth seeing. Then on Wednesday the 1st of June a real coup for the Empire and for the whole of Teesside. Public Image Ltd will be, unless someone can tell me different, making their first appearance in this good town. Johnny Rotten and his gang will be treading the boards. Snarling and slagging as only he can. But with songs that can rightly be described as classics. The only downside is that I will be in Lourdes. I might light a small candle for Mr Lydon. I’m sure he would appreciate it. Finally, for now, on the gig front; We Are Scientists. Monday 13th June is the date for this one. I saw these on the NME tour with the Arctics and Maximo Park a few years back . And a fine live band they are too. Quirky, poppy with tunes a plenty.

Then in the middle of all this for you clubbers is the 18th birthday party for, what can only be described as legendary, SugarShack. A name famous all over the country not just this region. And with keeping up their high standards they’ve drafted in Mark Ronson to be chief party animal. He’ll be blowing out candles and handing out cake. So get your dancing shoes on for Bank Holiday Sunday the 29th of May. Full details at the Empires web site. (Link below) Full details of all the gigs listed below;
