This Could Be Underwater Love….funny And Heart-warming Show From Laura Mugridge

Location

VAN HALEN AND WHIMSY, LIVE MUSIC AND NAUTICAL JUMPERS COMBINE FOR LAURA MUGRIDGE’S MAGICAL OCEAN JOURNEY

An epic comic tale of love, gods and sea creatures, The Watery Journey of Nereus Pike is a true story that Laura Mugridge made up. The comedian and storyteller has strong form when it comes to imaginative and playful productions guaranteed to delight audiences and her debut show – 2010’s Running On Air, which she performed in her 1978 VW campervan – received much critical acclaim and a Scotsman Fringe First Award.

Although performed in traditional theatre spaces this time, The Watery Journey of Nereus Pike retains Mugridge’s mischief and intimacy, as she describes how old man Nereus Pike happily floats to the bottom of the sea, re-enacting his sea-life encounters with help from the audience, an impromptu rave scene, a nautical jumper and quite a bit of Van Halen.

‘I wanted to create a story that was both magical and domestic,’ says Mugridge. ‘It’s epic, but with tiny details.’

An original and beautiful musical score is performed live by Tom Adams as Nereus makes his journey from the sunshine to the depths. Created in collaboration with improviser Katy Schutte and musician Tom Adams, and in association with Harrogate Theatre, The Watery Journey of Nereus Pike is a show where one person tells the story of another, revealing snippets of a curious old man’s life and exploring how he came to be on this journey.

The Guardian’s Lyn Gardner described Mugridge as ‘high-octane whimsy’ that would require ‘an iron heart not to be won over.’ Don’t even try to resist. Let Laura Mugridge and Nereus Pike win you over when this magical voyage comes to Harrogate Studio Theatre from Thursday 21 to Saturday 23 February.
