Northern Nosebag

Credit where its due, Hexham’s very own Bouchon Bistrot, has taken on over 2000 of it’s peers, to win another place for Northern Restaurants, in the final 9 of Channel 4’s “The F Word” , Best Local Restaurant Competition.

The Bouchon Bistrot won the Best French Restaurant Category, beating The French Table, from Surbiton in a TV cook-off. Other categories in the current series will include Italian, Indian, Chinese, Spanish, Thai, The Americas, British and the Rest of the World.

Great to hear the Best French Restaurant in Britain is in the Top-End of the country, even more rewarding to hear it’s tucked away in little old Hexham.

They join fellow Northern foody finalists Salvo’s Italian Restaurant in Headingly.

  1. Congratulations to another Northern winner, this time in the Chinese Restaurant category. In fact both finalists were from the North. Edinburgh’s Chop Chop, on Morrison Street and the eventual winner, Manchester’s Sweet Mandarin, in the Northern Quarter.

  2. Can’t believe it! What a steal. El Gato Negro Tapas, from Ripponden, Sowerby Bridge, quite simply stormed the Best Spanish restaurant category, this week, taking on Sarf Larndon’s, Lola Roja. Another victory for the North made, even more interesting, by the fact that there’s not a Spaniard amongst them… El Gato Negro’s head Chef is from Hull, plus… they were actually competing against a Spanish owned and staffed competitor. Tell you the truth, I thought our Yorkshire lot, had it in the bag quite early. Initial eyebrows were raised as the phrase “unique contemporary approach to Spanish cooking” was used to describe Lola Roja, and once I saw them serving their prawns with little plastic pipettes full of mayo sticking out… I had the feeling they were trying too hard. They even cocked their pudding up, Churros and chocolate, again trying too hard to please. In their desire to make them bigger and therefore apparently more appealing than El Gato Negro’s, they only succeeded in leaving them raw in the middle.

Anyway congratulations again to El Gato Negro. (The Black Cat, in case you’re wondering), Nice work lads, top effort!

  3. Well that’s it, 4 semi finalists, representing the north out of a total of 9, not sure how that’s gonna work in the play offs!
