Artist and tutor in the Department of Fine Art at Newcastle University, Tracey Tofield, in collaboration with bookbinder and photographer, Deidre Thompson have installed, ‘No one will be as interested as your own mind’ at the XL (ex Libris) Gallery at Newcastle University.

The installation deals subtly with the complex history of the site which housed the Fine Art Library from 1910-2006 and is now a gallery/ projects space.

The Indian philosopher, librarian and inventor, S.R. Ranganathan came up with The five laws of Library Science.  Principles of operating a library system, widely accepted by librarians across the world namely:

1. Books are for use.
2. Every reader his (or her) book.
3. Every book its reader.
4. Save the time of the reader.
5. The library is a growing organism.

The exhibition contains recent work-over 600 pages of painting, collage, drawing and video. The images and words encased in book format reflect the intimacy and ‘primary’ relationship between artist and viewer/reader.

Tracey states, “ I have a complex working life; artist, mother, tutor and agent,  and the book form is an intimate, direct, reflective, and practical ‘means of production’.
