Instamatic For The People. May 25 And Through June At The Cluny, Newcastle

Location

Instamatic for the People is the personal project of Newcastle photographer David Wala. It features over 200 informal portraits of musicians from the North East of England taken between May 2010 and May 2011, using a Fujifilm Instax camera.

The exhibition is a totally democratic project where everybody has the same status – all bands and band members are featured equally.

The subjects include members of established bands such as Maximo Park, Little Comets, Frankie and the Heartstrings, Detroit Social Club, and the Chapman Family, as well as many  up and coming musicians who may be the breakthrough acts of tomorrow.

David states, “This is both a snapshot of our thriving local music scene in 2010/2011 and a documentary record for years to come. I plan to revisit this project in a couple of years and see how everyone has progressed”.

The exhibition opens on 25 May with a preview and gig at The Cluny, in Newcastle which will feature musicians who participated in the project.

“It is an honour to have an exhibition at the venue where I regularly photograph gigs, and where many of the images from the exhibition were taken. The Cluny is a vital cog in our local music scene.”

The gig is a free event, with a collection being made for the Teenage Cancer Trust . A self published book will also be available to purchase online with all proceeds also going to Teenage Cancer Trust.

The exhibition, at The Cluny, opens on 25 May and will run throughout June. The opening night gig will feature several bands that have taken part  in the exhibition including, The Greeting Committee, Brilliant Mind, and Gem Andrews.

Simon Donald will be compering the night and there is also a DJ set by Detroit Social Club’s, David Burn.

All in all… sounds like one not to miss!
