In light of the recent surge of people joining the Facebook group ‘Secret York’ I thought it apt to highlight one of the most exciting gems of York city centre. ‘According to McGee’ opposite York’s second most recognisable landmark – Clifford’s Tower (or next to Ali G’s takeaway if you navigate the city via its fast-food institutions) provides an outlet for all you frustrated creative people who, like me, can’t manage to find the enigma that is Wentworth Studios.
Whether it’s just a dollop of culture you crave or you want to put that sketch pad you got for Christmas to good use, According to McGee provides the answer. The work of nationally, indeed internationally recognised artists frequents its walls and its Life Drawing sessions in satellite studios around York allow your repressed inner Picasso to come to the surface. Shows by 1960s legend Douglas Binder, Indian born Amrik Varkalis (recently interviewed in The Daily Telegraph), and ex-Miner Harry Malkin have helped put the centre of York in the spotlight as a place for muscular contemporary Art.
