ANOTHER CORKING HYENA COMEDY CLUB LINE-UP GUARANTEED TO BRIGHTEN UP A MISERABLE JULY

(Un)seasonal Affective Disorder? The biblical weather is keeping everyone in the doldrums, but our fantastic monthly Hyena Comedy Club on Saturday 28 July at Harrogate Theatre features not just one, two or three, but four rays of comedy sunshine. Okay, in truth, at least four of them will be griping about something or other, but they’ll make you laugh like a drain and forget your wet weather woes.

Actually, Bristol stand-up John Robins is charmingly upbeat, delivering personal tales of childhood innocence and adult monkeyshines with a sharp self-deprecating wit and a huge grin. His forthcoming Edinburgh show – his fourth solo Fringe outing – is called Incredible Scenes and focuses on the mischief Robins has got up to as he’s got older. Fresh from a stint on Russell Howard’s Good News, Robins’ engaging stories and smart commentary keep the laughs rolling in.

Genius grumpy middle-aged bloke observations, non-sequiturs and proper jokes fly thick and fast courtesy of circuit vet Gavin Webster.

Resident jester at The Stand Comedy Club’s Newcastle branch, this Geordie offers no-nonsense gags full of nonsense. It’ll make sense when you see him – and you really should. Webster may well be taking his life in his hands with forthcoming Edinburgh Fringe show, Bill Hicks Wasn’t Very Good, although, as with everything Webster says (generally loud and controversial), a pinch of salt is a necessity.

Loquacious Irishman Brendan Dempsey is another well-known name on the circuit – and rightly so; his always original, always up-to-date material is fact-packed and thought-provoking as well as hilarious.

His laid-back style belies an often-brutal wit, and Dempsey excels at grumpy observational humour. You may have seen him in the Father Ted Xmas Special, while eagle-eyed Scorcese fans may have spotted him in Gangs Of New York.

Bryan Lacey is this month’s host with the most, his cheeky delivery and slick material making him a reliable MC, able to warm up the crowd and deal with any hecklers. The Yorkshireman became a global internet hit with his funny-filled wedding song earlier this year, which made affectionate fun of his new bride and took pride in pointing out it was too late for her to change her mind.
